Palmaria Island

An island you walk right round, and you get there by boat.

The experience

We land with the Guidders at Terrizzo and follow path CAI 510 around Isola Palmaria, just off Portovenere. Cliffs dropping into the sea, holm oak woods, old quarries and views of Isola del Tino, Punta di Dante and Torre Scola. The path alternates easy stretches with steep pulls and simple rock steps; near Pozzale a short section is fitted with fixed ropes. We pass Forte Cavour on the way back, with the Apuan Alps on the horizon and the Gulf of Poets always below.

HOW TO GET THERE

Meeting point in Terrizzo, Palmaria
We’re in Terrizzo on Palmaria Island with the Guidders, setting off in the cool morning air for a circular hike around the island. Anyone who needs it can arrange the ferry with the guide (departures from La Spezia and Portovenere), not included in the tour price.
12:00LUNCH
Lunch at the highest point of the loop
We reach the highest point of the trek and enjoy lunch with a view over the coast, cliffs, and shimmering sea. This is the wow moment of the day, the one that makes you want to stay a little longer.
14:00HISTORY
Forte Cavour and the return side
On the opposite side of the island, the light and scenery shift: we pass near Forte Cavour and head back on a different path. That’s the beauty of a loop hike, always with the sea right beside us.
15:30RETURN
Back to Terrizzo
We wrap up the hike back at the cars in Terrizzo with the Guidders, after a really rewarding loop of trail and sea views. If we feel like it, we can end with a cold beer or a Coca-Cola together.
