Glossary

COORDINATOR

The "Coordinator" on Guiddy is a reference figure who organizes and manages the hikes, ensuring a pleasant and safe experience for all participants. Coordinators are mountain enthusiasts with experience in organizing outdoor activities. Although they are not alpine or hiking guides, Coordinators have a deep knowledge of the proposed routes, which they have already explored individually or with other groups. However, Coordinators do not possess the technical expertise of a professional guide and are therefore not required to provide detailed technical information about the route or surrounding environment. Their main role is to support the group, provide logistical guidance, and ensure the hike runs in a coordinated and safe manner.

GUIDE

The "Guide" on Guiddy is a qualified and certified professional who accompanies groups during hikes, providing not only logistical and safety support but also technical and cultural information about the route and the surrounding environment. Guides have specific training and are recognized by the competent authorities, which enables them to lead hikes in mountains and other natural environments safely. Unlike Coordinators, Guides are responsible for managing complex or emergency situations during the hike. They can also offer in-depth explanations on geological, botanical, historical, and cultural aspects of the area, thus enriching the participants' experience.

GUIDDERS

"Guidders" on Guiddy are the participants of the organized hikes. Enthusiasts of mountains and nature, Guidders are part of a community that shares the experience of hiking by following the instructions of Coordinators or Guides. As members of the community, Guidders contribute to the success of the hike by collaborating with other members and respecting the rules and recommendations to ensure safety and fun for everyone.

HIKE DIFFICULTY

The four CAI codes are used to classify the level of difficulty required for hiking routes. This categorization not only helps identify the difficulty of each route but also clearly distinguishes between hiking and mountaineering challenges.
Please note that on the hike page you will also find a description of the route and the required equipment (see question Where can I find detailed information about a specific hike?). As indicated in question Who can I contact for more information about the hikes?, if you have any doubts, contact us for more information about the itinerary!

Levels of difficulty

T – Tourist

Our recommendations

Easy hike

CAI Definition

Trails on small roads, mule tracks or wide paths, usually short and well marked, with no orientation difficulties. They are generally below 2,000 meters in altitude. They require only minimal familiarity with the mountain environment and basic physical fitness for walking.

Levels of difficulty

E – Hiking

Our recommendations

Intermediate or difficult hike

CAI Definition

Trails that cross various types of terrain, such as pastures, scree or rocky areas, with visible signs. They may include short stretches of leftover snow or steep slopes, sometimes equipped with cables in exposed areas. Some sections may be on rock but do not require climbing equipment. Good orientation skills, some experience in the mountains, good physical fitness, and suitable gear are necessary. These trails make up most mountain hikes in Italy.

EE – For Expert Hikers

Difficult hike

CAI Definition

Marked routes that require the ability to move on challenging terrain, such as steep and slippery slopes, rocky or grassy mixed terrain, or scree. They may include rocky sections with minor technical difficulties, such as easy via ferratas, but do not include glacier routes. These hikes require mountain experience, sure footing, no fear of heights, and proper equipment. If the trail is equipped, it is necessary to know how to use self-belaying equipment.

Levels of difficulty

EEA – For Expert Hikers with Equipment

Our recommendations

Difficult hike

CAI Definition

This label refers to equipped trails or via ferratas that require the use of self-belaying gear, such as carabiners, energy absorbers, and harnesses.

MOUNTAIN HIKE

Mountain hikes are characterized by routes that involve climbing techniques and extreme terrain. The evaluation of these itineraries takes into account not only technical difficulties but also overall factors such as the ruggedness of the mountain, isolation, terrain variability, rock quality, and the challenges in retreat or placing protection points. These routes require specific gear and advanced mountaineering skills. The length and elevation gain can vary greatly, but they are generally long and complex, requiring thorough preparation and the ability to face difficult and technical conditions.
