Cima Caione 3,140 m from Case di Viso: your first three-thousander in the upper Val Camonica
Cima Caione: a true 3,000 m peak
A real three-thousander, and you get there on foot.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Case di Viso, the hamlet of stone barns above Ponte di Legno, and work our way up the whole Val di Viso: pastures and summer farms first, then the ground opens out and turns stony. Past the alpine tarns the path crosses the scree and runs into Great War trenches and gun positions, from the days when these ridges were the front line. The final stretch climbs steadily to Cima Caione, 3,140 metres: from up there, on a clear day, your eye runs from the Adamello to the Ortles-Cevedale and across to the Orobie. We return down the same valley.
5 reasons to come - a three-thousander you reach on foot, no rope needed - Great War trenches and positions along the route - the alpine tarns of the upper Val di Viso - the view from the Adamello to the Ortles-Cevedale - the stone hamlet of Case di Viso
Who it suits A long day at altitude: you need to be fit and used to walking for hours on scree. Nothing technical.
