WHY THIS HIKE

The Secchia Springs

Passo dell'Ospedalaccio
At the edge of the woods stands a crossroads with a Napoleonic boundary stone, a valuable historical testimony to the importance of this pass
10:00VIEWPOINT
Secchia Springs
In the middle of the basin between Monte Alto, Alpe di Succiso and Casarola, a true natural amphitheatre, lies a wide clearing where the waters that form the first stretch of the Secchia River spring forth.
11:00PASS
Passo di Pietra Tagliata
A pass carved into the rock, from where the view stretches out to the sea of the Ligurian gulf. From here begins the most challenging part of the route, although a path along the hillside allows you to avoid the most exposed stretch.
12:00WATER
Alpe di Succiso
The highest and most scenic point of the route; weather permitting, the view extends as far as Corsica and the Tuscan Archipelago.
13:00SUMMIT
Monte Casarola
This is the second peak on the route, closing off the watershed between the Secchia valley and the Val d'Enza. It faces Monte Ventasso to the north, Cusna and Cavalbianco to the east and south-east, and La Nuda to the south. From here the trail descends back towards the bottom of the springs' basin.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Paolo, an environmental hiking guide, with a great passion for mountains, trekking and long-distance walks. I live at the foot of the Reggio Apennines, which I love exploring thoroughly, including the least-walked corners. I like sharing them with people who want to (re)discover this land, so rich in nature, history and food — calmly, unhurried, taking the time to look around, watch the plants, look for animal tracks, admire the views. But there's another aim too: understanding. How the environment evolved, how people changed it, for better and worse, and how nature might, one day, take it back. It's the question I carry on every trail. Walk with me and you'll take it home. 🌿 See you in the mountains, Guidders!
