WHY THIS HIKE
The old road that linked Lecco to the Valtellina
The Sentiero del Viandante is the historic mule track running along the eastern shore of Lake Como, used for centuries by merchants, pilgrims and soldiers to connect Lecco with the Valtellina. Today it is one of Lombardy's best-loved walks, and this stretch — from Abbadia Lariana to Lierna — is among the finest.

The experience
The route passes through villages where time seems to have stopped, old churches, dry-stone walls and olive groves overlooking the water. We walk mostly along the hillside, the lake below us and the Grigna behind.
It is 12 kilometres with barely 400 metres of ascent: a walk genuinely suited to everyone. The return is by train from Lierna station to Abbadia — ten minutes — so the ticket must be bought in advance and is not included.
This is an easy hike: 12 kilometres and 400 metres of ascent on a mule track, with no difficulties. Perfect for families, beginners and anyone after a day of lake and history. Bring walking shoes, water and your train ticket for the return.
Come with the Guidders: book your place and let's walk the Viandante.

Easy — this outing
Perfect for those who want to enjoy nature without too much effort. Short, well-marked trails with gentle slopes. No technical difficulties, just a desire to walk, breathe in the fresh air, and share the day with a group.
Ideal for: Beginners, families, those who want to take their first steps in trekking.
Easy Plus
A little faster pace, but still accessible. Slightly longer routes or with a few more hills, requiring some walking experience. The terrain is always easy and safe.
Ideal for: Those who walk regularly and want to challenge themselves a little.
Intermediate
Here we enter the world of true trekking. Steeper climbs, stretches on uneven or longer trails that require stamina. The physical effort is medium to high, and the fatigue is noticeable... but so is the satisfaction!
Ideal for: Those who already have experience and a good level of physical fitness.
Intermediate Plus
When the mountains begin to take their toll. More challenging routes in terms of gradient or duration, with technical sections or uneven terrain. Even a medium elevation gain can be tough if concentrated in just a few kilometers
Ideal for: Trained hikers, accustomed to walking on mountain paths
Difficult
Level suitable for experienced hikers with excellent stamina and surefootedness. The physical challenge is high, and there may be steep sections or possible exposure, which is always noted in the hike description. Perfect for those who enjoy pushing their limits and conquering significant peaks.
Ideal for: Those who already have experience in an Alpine environment and want to challenge themselves.
Difficult Plus
Only for true Guidders with their Wild Spirit at its peak Long routes, significant elevation gain (over 1,100 m), and technical or exposed terrain. Excellent physical preparation, sure-footedness, and the ability to manage fatigue at high altitude are required.
Ideal for: Highly trained and experienced hikers in the mountains.
Exposure and exposed sections
NONE
No exposed sections reported on the route.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Giulia, an environmental hiking guide: from the Marche originally, Lombard by adoption. I've always had a strong bond with nature and with walking, born among the hills and grown later among mountain trails. I love travelling and finding new routes, fascinated by a simple but extraordinary tool: our legs, able to take us almost anywhere with patience and stubbornness. For a long time I mostly walked alone. Then I discovered how good it is to share the wonder of a view and the feelings of a trail with other people — and that's why I do this job today. On my outings I bring enthusiasm, a willingness to listen and plenty of positive energy. 🥾🌿 See you in the mountains, Guidders!
