La Verna Sanctuary Loop: cliffs, sacred forest and Frassati trail
La Verna: between rock and sky
A loop between faith, ancient forest and rock. We set off with the Guidders from the La Verna Sanctuary, and after just a few steps we pass beneath the striking Scogliera delle Stimmate cliff, straight into the Sacred Forest.
The experience
The route is a loop that winds through century-old beeches and firs, with gentle ups and downs keeping the pace easy almost to the end. We walk through cool shade, pass by the curious Grotta di Fra David tucked under a giant boulder, and skirt the Ghiacciaia, a natural fridge carved into the rock. In the final stretch the trail climbs more decisively toward the highest point of the loop, giving us the best views before closing the circle back at the Sanctuary.
Here the CAI Tuscany dedicated the trail to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati: walking here means following his footsteps too, between faith, nature and a slow pace.
5 reasons to join - the loop between Scogliera delle Stimmate and the Sacred Forest - Grotta di Fra David and the mysterious Ghiacciaia - century-old beeches and firs watching over you - La Verna Sanctuary as both start and finish - a trail dedicated to Blessed Frassati, real history among the trees
