Nomaglio Chestnut Festival: the Chestnut Trail above the Serra d'Ivrea
Nomaglio: chestnut festival
Ancient chestnut groves, stone drying huts and a whole village celebrating: on Sunday we climb to Nomaglio for the Chestnut Festival, above the Serra d'Ivrea.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Montestrutto, with its castle above the Dora, and climb the Chestnut Trail to Nomaglio. We continue through the woods towards Andrate and the col of Croce Serra, overlooking the plain and the Alps, where we have lunch. In the early afternoon we go down into the village for the festival: roasted chestnuts, canestrelli biscuits and the mill and drying hut open for visits. Then we return to Montestrutto among the chestnuts.
Nomaglio has an ecomuseum dedicated to the chestnut, with the old mill and drying hut: for centuries chestnut flour was the bread of the cold months here.
Anyone who walks regularly: the climb is steady on mule tracks and paths, with no difficult stretches.
Come to the festival with the Guidders: a Sunday of chestnuts and mountains.
Montestrutto, part of Settimo Vittone, is about an hour and three quarters from Milan: A4 and A5 to Quincinetto, then the main road to Montestrutto. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
