Rifugio Longo and Lago del Diavolo in autumn: the golden larches of Val Sasso from Carona
Lago del Diavolo when the larches turn gold
Val Sasso, above Carona, is one of the wildest valleys of Val Brembana, and its finest moment comes in autumn. From mid-October the larches light up in yellow and orange, the pastures turn blond and the clear air draws the peaks of the Orobie Alps sharply. In the morning frost whitens the meadows and the small lakes mirror the golden woods.
The experience
With the Guidders we climb from Carona up Val Sasso to Rifugio Longo, dedicated to the Longo brothers lost on the Matterhorn, and just above it we look out over Lago del Diavolo, its dark water set among the rocks and wrapped in shepherds' legends. Lunch by the lake, then we head back on the same path, with the afternoon light among the larches.
It is an intermediate but long hike on marked paths with no technical difficulties: you need trained legs. In autumn it is cold up high and in the morning the path can be frozen: bring high boots, microspikes, gloves and a hat. Lunch, packed or at the hut, is not included.
