Mount Prinzera: autumn hike through ophiolite rock in the Parma Apennines
Prinzera: our lunar lookout
A mountain that looks like it landed from the moon, right outside Parma.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Boschi di Bardone, walking a full loop through the Mount Prinzera Nature Reserve: autumn woods, golden leaves underfoot, and the rocky profile of the mountain growing clearer with every step. The trail dips gently through warm fall colors, then climbs steadily in the final stretch, revealing the striking ophiolite rock that gives Prinzera its almost "lunar" look. We climb up to the summit ridge, where the view opens across the whole Parma Apennines.
Part of the route follows old military paths built in the early 1900s by Parma's army engineers: we're literally walking on history, past dry-stone walls and century-old paved stretches.
5 reasons to join - the unique "lunar" rock landscape of the ophiolites - autumn foliage lighting up the woods in warm colors - a full loop, no backtracking - the story behind the early 1900s military trails - 360° views over the Parma Apennines
