Boschi di Carrega: a loop through the regional park among lakes, villas and ancient woodlands
Carrega: Parma's enchanted wood
A fairytale forest, just outside Parma.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Strada del Conventino and dive straight into oaks, sequoias and the rare bald cypress, a North American swamp species that found a home here. The route is a loop: we climb gently through forest trails and clearings, reach the highest point near Monte Castione, then descend through woods that change colour at every turn. No tough climbs, just nature flowing under your feet.
These woods were once a hunting reserve for the Farnese, then the Bourbons, and finally the Carrega princes: a slice of Parma's history disguised as a forest. Optional detour to Lago della Svizzera and Lago della Grotta, created by the Carrega family in the early 1900s with fir trees that give an almost alpine feel.
5 reasons to join - a loop through one of Emilia's loveliest woods - unexpected exotic trees, like the bald cypress - the detour to the Svizzera and Grotta lakes - real history between Farnese, Bourbons and Carrega - a light day, perfect to unplug
