Monte Isola and the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola
Monte Isola and the Madonna della Ceriola
An island with no cars, in the middle of the lake.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Sulzano and a short ferry crossing takes us to Monte Isola, the largest inhabited lake island in Europe. There are no cars here and time slows down: you walk through lanes, olive groves and hamlets where life follows the rhythm of footsteps. The loop starts at Peschiera Maraglio, climbs through the village of Cure to the sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola, the highest point, and drops by Masse and Carzano.
5 reasons to come - the sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola, at the island's summit - Monte Isola, the largest inhabited lake island in Europe - a complete loop between Peschiera Maraglio and Carzano - the lanes and olive groves of a place without cars - Lake Iseo seen from the inside
Who it suits A loop on mule tracks and lanes with a steady climb: normal walking fitness is enough.
