The experience

We set off with the Guidders from the moraine of the Belvedere Glacier and climb through woods and pastures, with the East Face of Monte Rosa growing ever larger before us. The route is there-and-back: we ascend steadily, taking in the altitude step by step, until we reach the Zamboni Zappa Refuge, nestled in the grassy basin of Alpe Pedriola. From there, just one last effort over rock and scree brings us to Lago delle Locce, a turquoise eye of water set into the rock, with Monte Rosa mirrored within it.

The East Face of Monte Rosa that we see as we climb is the highest and most imposing in the entire Alps: a sight that alone justifies the trip.

Meeting point at the free parking lot of Poltrone e Sofà in Gravellona Toce (VB)
We'll meet up at 8:30 with the Guidders at the Free Parking Lot of Poltrone e Sofà in Gravellona Toce, the meeting point for the day — there's a café here for coffee and restrooms. Once we've filled up the cars, we'll set off for Valle Anzasca.

Paid parking lot in Pecetto di Macugnaga
We set off from the Pecetto car park and head towards our destination, the beautiful Lago delle Locce.

Zamboni Zappa Refuge
We arrive at Rifugio Zamboni Zappa, nestled in the Alpe Pedriola basin: here we stop to admire the East Face of Monte Rosa, towering over the entire valley. A moment to catch our breath before climbing towards Lago delle Locce, through steeper stretches and breathtaking views.

Lago delle Locce
After leaving Rifugio Zamboni behind us, we continue uphill with some challenging sections towards the end of the route and finally reach the beautiful Lago delle Locce. Here we'll enjoy our packed lunch and, if we're lucky, soak up some sunshine too. After a good cup of coffee, we head back down to Rifugio Zamboni Zappa.

Return to the Refuge
We head back towards Rifugio Zamboni Zappa, leaving it on our right to take the path that climbs up the ridge of the glacial moraine, where we'll be able to see what remains of the Locce Glacier. It's a truly incredible experience.

Arrival in Pecetto
We head straight back down the trail until we reach the car park in Pecetto di Macugnaga again, where we'll say our goodbyes and maybe — actually, definitely — enjoy a nice cold beer together, reminiscing about the great moments of the day and already planning our next adventure.
