WHY THIS HIKE

The Molare Dam

Meeting point 9:00approximate
Ovada (AL), Ovada, provincia di Alessandria, Italia. The exact time is confirmed in the group chat. We usually meet a little earlier for breakfast together, when possible.
HOW TO GET THERE
09:00MEETING
Ovada (AL)
Meeting point: Bennet car park in Belforte Monferrato, Ovada (AL).
09:30PARKING
Ca' du Ratto
We'll set off through the woods of the Orba Valley, where an adventurous journey awaits us, among lost trails, wetlands, a nature that has forcefully reclaimed its spaces, and the memory of a time that can never return.
10:00MULE TRACK
Diga di Molare
Built in the 1920s at the foot of Bric Zerbino, the Diga di Molare (Ovada) and the nearby Diga dello Zerbino dam gave rise to the large basin of Lake Ortiglieto, created to feed the hydroelectric plant below. Very little remains of this complex today, because a (foretold) catastrophe swept away not only one of the two dams but also the lives of over 100 people, changing the geography of this place forever.
11:00WATER
Rio delle Brigne
We'll descend through the woods to reach the Rio delle Brigne and discover what remains of the old reservoir. NOTE: the stretch through the woods that will take us to the stream bed is off-trail, so proper gear and a reasonable attitude to moving through nature are required.
12:00HIKING TRAIL
Bric Zerbino
After fording the river, we'll climb the slope on a hiking trail to reach the other side of the Diga di Molare and Bric Zerbino, symbolic sites of the disaster.
14:00WATER
Lake Ortiglieto
We'll close the circle on the history of this early 1900s engineering complex at Lake Ortiglieto, the only small reservoir remaining along the Orba stream.
15:30RETURN
Briccu dl'Audura
We'll head back to the cars climbing up to the Briccu dl'Audura. Along the trail we'll come across abandoned houses, orchards now overtaken by vegetation, and many other "clues" of a bygone era of thriving settlements.

How do you get to Ovada? By carpooling.

You say so when booking, then you get organised in the Telegram group. Contacts and costs are agreed between you: a seat isn't guaranteed.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Giorgia, an environmental hiking guide: raised among trails, and glad I never stopped. I've lived the mountains since I was a child, and since 2019 I've turned that passion into a full-time job. I guide adults and children along the trails of the Apennines, the Alps and around Europe, with a constant appetite for discovering, learning and sharing. I'm never still: I study, read, write, fly a drone, raise butterflies and raise small muddy explorers through Adventure Education projects. And yes, I'm happy: this is the life I dreamed of, and there's nothing in the world I'd rather do "when I grow up". 🦋🥾 See you in the mountains, Guidders!
