The Sentiero delle Anime in Valchiusella: rock carvings and autumn woods above Traversella
Sentiero delle Anime in autumn
Rocks marked with crosses and cup marks, a wood of chestnuts and birches turning yellow and rust at the end of October, and a miners' village at the foot of the valley: the Sentiero delle Anime is Valchiusella at its most mysterious.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Traversella and climb through the woods to the Piazza hut. From there the path winds among the carved rocks, one after another, amid trees changing colour, up to the meadows of the Piani di Cappia, where we stop for lunch with the valley at our feet. We loop back to Traversella, always through the woods.
Along the path there are more than a hundred rock carvings, made over the centuries; Traversella, meanwhile, is famous for its iron mines, told in the village's small mineral museum.
Anyone who walks with some regularity: the climb is gentle and the loop short, with plenty of stops.
Come and discover Valchiusella's secrets with the Guidders: an autumn of stories carved in stone.
Traversella is less than two hours from Milan: A4 to the Ivrea exit, then the Valchiusella road up to the top. Parking in the village. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
