WHY THIS HIKE

The Lakes of Roburent

Three glacial lakes enclosed by limestone peaks.

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

We are in the upper Valle Stura di Demonte, a place of wide views and remarkable variety. Here broad grasslands, once given over to grazing, are closed in by high limestone peaks and hide, in their folds, large sheets of water of glacial and karst origin: Lake Oronaye and the Roburent lakes, upper, middle and lower. It is one of the best-loved outings in the Cuneo area, and it is easy to see why.

5 reasons to come - the Roburent lakes, three sheets of water one after another - Lake Oronaye along the way - the grasslands of the upper Valle Stura - the limestone peaks closing in the basin - one of the finest outings in the Cuneo area

Who it suits A path walk with nothing technical: some fitness is needed.

The Cuneo mountains you do not expect: come and find them with the Guidders.

Meeting point 9:00approximate
La Clapiere, Strada Statale 21 Della Maddalena. The exact time is confirmed in the group chat. We usually meet a little earlier for breakfast together, when possible.
HOW TO GET THERE
09:00MEETING
La Clapiere
The meeting point is the small car park at l'Orrenaye, in the La Clapiere area, just beyond Colle della Maddalena. The trail heads into the wide Roburent Valley, following the course of the small Oronaye stream.
10:00WATER
Lake Oronaye
After crossing the stream in several spots, the climb becomes gentler as the Lake Oronaye comes into view. Its calm green waters reflect the pointed peak of Bec de Lievre, while on the horizon stand the Aiguilles Orientale and Occidentale of the Oronaye and Monte Oronaye.
11:00WATER
Lake Superiore di Roburent
After reaching the highest point of the route, it appears in all its beauty: a large arc-shaped body of water occupying two neighbouring basins merged together, into which a rocky promontory juts. All around are green meadows dotted with the remains of old military shelters, with the mountains of the Maritime Alps completing the outstanding panorama.
12:00WATER
Lake Mediano and Lake Inferiore di Roburent
Leaving the upper lake behind, continue along the path that skirts it to the left and, after a short climb, reach the Lago Mediano di Roburent. Here the green meadows give way to a rocky landscape. A few hundred metres further on you reach the last lake: the Lago Inferiore di Roburent, the smallest of the three. Its waters seep into the ground and are fed by melting snow. For a better panoramic view, head to the far tip by staying at altitude on the path above its shores.
13:00FOOD STOP
Lake Superiore di Roburent
Retracing the easy path, you reach the Lago Superiore di Roburent once again, where the green meadows are the ideal spot to enjoy a packed lunch and rest. You can also reach the Colle di Roburent, where a boundary stone marks the alpine border between Italy and France and where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the lakes.
14:00WATER
Lake Oronaye
Following the path back, you return to the Lago dell'Oronaye.
15:00RETURN
La Clapiere
You reach the Orrenaye car park again, where the hike ends.
