Snowshoe day and avalanche rescue skills at the Campelli above Schilpario
Snowshoes and avalanche rescue at the Campelli
A snow day worth double: we snowshoe through the woods of the Val di Scalve up to the Campelli basin, and up there we learn to use a transceiver, shovel and probe. The foundation for enjoying the winter mountains with the right mindset.
The experience
We set off from the Fondi di Schilpario and climb among snow-laden firs and larches. Along the way we talk about snow, slopes and how to choose where to go.
In the Campelli basin, among the Scalve Dolomites, the training ground opens up: how a transceiver works, searching for a buried person, probing and digging. Everyone has a go, in turns, until it clicks. Packed lunch in the snow and back in the afternoon.
You need snowshoes, waterproof boots, layered clothing, gloves and a hat, plus a packed lunch. The group is small, 8 Guidders at most, so everyone has time to practise. Car pooling in the Telegram group.
Schilpario is in Val di Scalve, an hour and a half from Bergamo and about two hours from Milan, via the Passo della Presolana. We meet at the Fondi, just outside the village on the road to the Passo del Vivione, where there is parking.
