Cammino Materano: 6 days on foot from Altamura to Matera, across murge, gorges and farms
Six days on the plateau, to reach the Sassi on foot
The Via Peuceta is the branch of the Cammino Materano that crosses the Alta Murgia: a plateau of stone and wheat where trees are countable and fortified farms appear on the horizon like ships. You walk on tratturi, ancient transhumance tracks a hundred metres wide, in a silence that is rare in Italy.
Is this trip for me?
Five vibes, an effort level and a type of trip: so you can tell in ten seconds if it's for you.
Along the way there is Castel del Monte, Frederick II's octagon that nobody has yet explained, the gorges, the rock villages and the carved churches. And at the end, after a hundred and twenty kilometres, you reach the rim of the Matera gorge and see the Sassi on the other side: the finest ending an Italian walk can have.
