Monte Nudo and Pizzoni di Laveno Loop
Pizzoni di Laveno: ridge and colors
Three peaks on a ridge, a single loop, the woods ablaze with color.
The experience
We start from Vararo, at about 750 meters; the trail climbs steadily through the woods and takes you up to Monte Nudo, beyond 1200 meters. The name is no coincidence: at the top, the trees step aside and the view takes center stage, with Lake Maggiore down below and the Alps in the background. It's the perfect spot to sit down, open your backpack, and pretend not to think about the elevation gain you just tackled.
The descent goes through the Pizzoni di Laveno, a more varied and enjoyable stretch, among ridges, open views, and the pleasure of letting gravity do the work. Then the loop closes and you return to the starting point with that good kind of tiredness that justifies a second dessert.
In numbers: about 10.5 km, 680 m of elevation gain, a loop starting and ending in Vararo.
Here, history is still visible in the details: the name itself tells of a territory once contested between Laveno and the neighboring valleys, and the ridge we walk along is the very same one that generations of CAI hikers have trodden for decades.
5 reasons to come - three peaks in a single day, along one ridge - the autumn foliage that sets the whole forest alight - a true loop, no retracing your steps - open views over Lake Maggiore from above - a mountain outing just a stone's throw from Varese
Who it's for For those with trained legs and a bit of hiking experience: the ridge requires sure footing, but no technical gear is needed.
