WHY THIS TRIP

The stretch of the Francigena everyone pictures

From Lucca to Siena run a hundred and twenty kilometres of the road that in the Middle Ages carried pilgrims from Canterbury to Rome. It is the finest section of all: across the hills of Chianti and the Valdelsa, sleeping in walled villages, passing beneath the towers of San Gimignano and arriving in Piazza del Campo through the right gate, the one the pilgrims used.

Ostelli del pellegrino, locande e agriturismi nei borghi

In between stands Monteriggioni, the ring of walls with fourteen towers that Dante placed in the Inferno, and there are wheat fields, lines of cypresses and Romanesque churches in the middle of nowhere. You walk on white gravel roads, the same ones as the Eroica, and eat the way Tuscany eats.
