WHY THIS HIKE

Monte Vioz at 3645 metres

Ci troviamo nella Val di Pejo, una delle porte d'accesso al gruppo delle tredici cime che attorniano il ghiacciaio dei Forni. Il Monte Vioz sorge ad alta quota: 3645 metri raggiungibili con fatica ma sempre su sentiero. Per avvicinarci ci serviremo degli impianti che da Pejo fonti ci porteranno alla stazione del Doss dei Gembri, bellissima zona naturale che per noi sarà solo il punto di partenza! Il sentiero salirà costantemente, passando subito da un'area in cui si trovano dei resti di trincee della guerra, e si alzerà costeggiando prima con traversi nel prato e poi man mano in ambiente sempre più sterile e aspro, in un'ambientazione quasi marziana di infinita roccia. Qui ci sarà un passaggio chiave: la zona del Brich, a 3200 metri, che ci porterà verso l'ultimo pendio. Sentendo l'aria assottigliarsi per via dell'alta quota, passeremo i tornanti che ci condurranno ripidamente a fare capolino al Rifugio Mantova! Dallo spettacolare cucuzzolo su cui è posto la vista è impagabile, così come la soddisfazione di essere arrivati tanto in alto! Sotto di noi si sviluppa la Val della Mite, le lingue glaciali che la lambiscono e strati di montagne che si perdono all'orizzonte. Un solo ultimo sforzo per arrivare alla croce e la vista si apre sull'immenso ghiacciaio dei Forni. Questa cima non è una meta per tutti, il sentiero è molto lungo, impegnativo e consigliato a escursionisti esperti. Ma la gioia e la magia che derivano dalle più grandi fatiche vengono sempre ripagate dalla montagna, e questa meta in particolare è un'occasione di avvicinarsi al mondo delle alte quota senza necessità di attrezzature e difficoltà contenute all'escursionismo.
