Valpelline and Gran San Bernardo: 3 days of trekking between Place Moulin, Bivacco Molline and Bivacco Regondi
3 days in the Pennine Alps
Three days in the Aosta Valley almost nobody walks.
The experience
Day 1, Valpelline. We set off with the Guidders from the Place Moulin dam and follow the turquoise lake to Rifugio Prarayer at the head of the valley, with the Tsa de Tsan glacier and the Dent d'Hérens ahead. An easy stage, then a transfer to the hotel in Etroubles.
Day 2, Great St Bernard. From the Menouve valley we climb through larches and high pastures to Bivacco Molline, in an amphitheatre at the foot of the north face of Mont Vélan.
Day 3, Ollomont valley. From the village of By, past Lago di By, we climb to Bivacco Regondi, with the Grand Combin and its glaciers filling the view. Back at the cars in the afternoon.
5 reasons to come - the turquoise lake of Place Moulin below the Dent d'Hérens - two high bivouacs in two different valleys - the north face of the Vélan and the Grand Combin up close - valleys where only the marmots break the silence - three real walking days, with a hotel bed in between
Who it suits You need a bit of stamina: three days of walking in a row, moderate effort and nothing technical.
The quieter side of the Aosta Valley is waiting: let's go, Guidders.
