Valmalenco in autumn: Alpe Ventina and the glacier trail among golden larches below Monte Disgrazia
Ventina: larches below Disgrazia
A larch wood that turns into a blaze of gold in October, two huts on a plateau and, ahead, Monte Disgrazia: Alpe Ventina is Valmalenco at its most beautiful.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Chiareggio, the last village in the valley, and climb through the larches to Alpe Ventina, where the Gerli-Porro and Ventina huts look out at the glacier. From there we follow the Vittorio Sella glacier trail towards the glacier snout, among smoothed rocks and streams, then return to the alp for lunch facing the Disgrazia. We head back to Chiareggio with the low sun setting the larches alight.
The Disgrazia, 3,678 metres, is the queen of Valmalenco; along the glacier trail, signs mark how far the ice reached in past years, and you see at a glance how much the mountain has changed.
Anyone with some fitness: the climb to the alp is steady on a good path, and the glacier loop is almost flat.
Come and see Valmalenco ablaze with the Guidders: larches, ice and granite in the same photo.
Chiareggio is about two and a half hours from Milan: the SS36 to Colico, the Valtellina road to Sondrio, then the Valmalenco road to Chiesa and the climb to Chiareggio. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
