Valle Antrona in autumn: Lago di Antrona and Lago di Campliccioli among beeches and larches
Antrona and Campliccioli lakes
Two turquoise lakes, one born of a landslide and one of a dam, in a side valley of Ossola almost nobody knows. In late October the beeches below and the larches above change colour at the same time: it is the right week.
The experience
From Antronapiana we climb in half an hour to Lago di Antrona, formed in 1642 when a landslide blocked the valley. We round the shore and follow the old dam service railway, with tunnels and walkways, to Lago di Campliccioli.
Lunch on the dam, looking over the lake and the larches. Back the same way, with a detour to the Sajont waterfall if the stream is running.
The old railway tunnels are dark: a headlamp is useful. Packed lunch, no hut open in autumn.
Antronapiana is an hour and fifty from Milan: A26 and expressway to Villadossola, then the Valle Antrona road to its end. Free parking in the village. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
