WHY THIS HIKE

Val Veddasca and its alpine pastures

Ancient pastures a step away from Lake Maggiore.

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

We set off with the Guidders from Curiglia, in the heart of the Varese hills, on a loop in the Val Veddasca that takes you by surprise: we are very close to Lake Maggiore, yet the feel is that of far more alpine and isolated country. We cross old summer pastures such as Alpe Riva and Sarona, woods and clearings, as far as the Alpone di Curiglia and the striking Masso delle Croci. The height gain is balanced and the views never stop.

5 reasons to come - the pastures of Alpe Riva and Sarona - the Masso delle Croci, with its carvings - the Alpone di Curiglia and the view along the valley - a varied loop with balanced height gain - the Val Veddasca, away from the crowded routes

Who it suits A varied path with balanced height gain: normal walking fitness is enough.

A side of the Varese hills you do not expect: come and find it with the Guidders.

HOW TO GET THERE
08:30PARKING
Starting from Curiglia
Our hike begins in Curiglia, following the ancient Chestnut Trail. Chestnuts were once a vital source of sustenance for the mountain dwellers, and in Curiglia, you can still visit the old "grà" – a small communal building used for drying chestnuts. We'll set off from the center of Curiglia, immediately entering the woods on a well-marked path. The initial ascent is gradual but steady, perfect for warming up your legs. You'll find yourself in a tranquil setting, immersed in nature and far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
10:30VIEWPOINT
Alpone di Curiglia: A Hidden Gem for Hikers
"Our trail leads to Alpone di Curiglia, a stunning alpine pasture near the Church of the Madonna della Guardia. Built in the early 1900s, the church owes its existence to the women of Alpone, who heroically carried heavy stones from the valley floor up to the pasture in their traditional baskets. From this scenic vantage point, enjoy breathtaking views over the Val Veddasca and Lake Maggiore."
11:30VIEWPOINT
"Cross Rock" or "Rock of the Crosses"
"We'll trek through a vast beech forest leading to the Masso delle Croci (Rock of the Crosses), a cup-marked boulder showcasing the passage of different historical eras. Marvel at the cupules and anthropomorphic crosses used by the Lepontii people for rituals linked to astral cycles, and then discover Latin and Greek crosses dating back to the Christianization of the valley, which took hold in the 16th century with Carlo Borromeo. Borromeo's pastoral visit was so significant that you can admire a monument built in his honor at the entrance to the village of Curiglia."
13:00VIEWPOINT
Loop hike
For our descent, we'll complete a loop, passing by Alpe Ca’ del Sasso on a trail that alternates between more technical sections and easier, flowing paths.
15:00RETURN
Back to the vehicles
The descent is steady but never monotonous, with several scenic viewpoints along the way back to Curiglia.
