HOW TO GET THERE
08:30PARKING
Stage 1 Varzi - Capanne di Cosola
Difficulty: E+ Duration: 6/7 h Ascent: 1600 m Descent: 500 m Length: 22 km The trek starts from Varzi, an ancient medieval mountain village in the heart of Valle Staffora, in Oltrepò Pavese (the Lombard Apennines), once an important trading post along the Via del Sale, at an altitude of about 400 m. We gain elevation reaching Monte Boglelio, a thousand metres higher up, where the broad ridge begins that will accompany us all the way to Monte Antola on the second day. We will follow the ridgeline, crossing wide scenic clearings and some beech woods, until we reach the summit of Monte Chiappo (1700 m), the highest point of the entire Via del Sale. From up there you can enjoy magnificent 360-degree views over the northern Apennines, the Gulf of Genoa, the Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia plains, and the imposing chain of the central and western Alps, with the most important peaks exceeding 4000 m. An exceptional view, one of a kind. From the summit of Chiappo we will descend to Capanne di Cosola, a small village where we will spend the night.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Piermaria, an environmental hiking guide for 14 years, after a long background in hiking and mountaineering. For almost 30 years I've been designing routes for people who love discovering beautiful corners of nature, in good company, in Italy and abroad: I plan itineraries, build hiking projects for public bodies and run environmental education in state schools. I'm also a coach on basic hiking courses and on physical preparation courses, I work with the Courmayeur Mountain Guides on their introduction-to-mountaineering programmes, and I write guidebooks, hiking maps and articles about nature and hiking. For a couple of years I've also been making documentaries about the mountains: in January my first one, about the hills and mountains of the Oltrepò Pavese, was in competition at the Orobie Film Festival in Bergamo — 16 works selected out of 170 submitted. 🎬 See you in the mountains, Guidders!
