The experience

We’ll set off from Roncobello, making our way up through woods, pastures and mountain trails until we reach this lake nestled amongst the peaks. The circular return route via Foppa dei Vitelli offers sweeping views and that wonderful feeling of having earned every step. The hike starts from Roncobello, in the upper Brembana Valley, following well-marked trails that pass through cool woods and ancient mountain huts. As you gain altitude, the view opens up over the Bergamo mountains until you reach Lake Pietra Quadra, a small alpine gem surrounded by rocky terrain and pastures.

The route involves a significant elevation gain and requires a good level of fitness. Some sections are steep and on stony ground, especially in the upper part and during the descent from Foppa dei Vitelli. An ideal trek for those seeking authentic nature, a satisfying challenge and genuine views.

Ready to conquer Lake Pietra Quadra with the Guidders? Grab your rucksack, lace up your boots and come and experience a real trek amidst the Orobic landscapes, wild trails and plenty of positive group energy.

HOW TO GET THERE
09:30MEETING
The Departure: Roncobello and the Embrace of the Forest
The challenge begins among the houses of Roncobello (1,009 m). Following the CAI signs, the trail immediately enters a dense forest of broadleaf and coniferous trees. This is the "patience" stage: the slope is constant and steep, allowing for rapid elevation gain while the noise of the village fades, replaced by the rustling of the wind through the fir trees and the call of the woodpeckers.
13:00VIEWPOINT
The destination: The Pietra Quadra body of water
After the final effort, the terrain levels out slightly and reveals Lake Pietra Quadra (2,114 m). The view is breathtaking: the vertical walls of Mount Pietra Quadra are reflected in the still water, creating a natural amphitheater of rare beauty. It's time to recharge your batteries and enjoy the silence, surrounded by a crown of peaks that seem to touch the sky.
16:30RETURN
The Wild Return: The Foppa dei Vitelli Labyrinth
For the return journey, take the detour toward Foppa dei Vitelli. This stage is a dive into the rugged side of the Orobie Alps: you cross a karst plateau characterized by bizarre rock formations and wide open spaces. The descent into the valley requires a steady eye and surefootedness, gradually leading us back to the low pastures and finally back into the thick forest, until you glimpse the roofs of Roncobello, the final point of this incredible loop.

How do you get to Roncobello? By carpooling.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Alessandro, a mid-mountain leader registered with the Collegio Guide Alpine Lombardia since 2020 and an International Mountain Leader (UIMLA) since 2025. The mountains are three things at once for me: freedom, discovery and sharing. Every trail is a chance to feel something real and to build bonds that outlast the day — which is exactly why I lead groups instead of walking alone. With the Guidders I'll take you on hikes and trips that taste of nature, endless views and shared smiles. The best adventures always start together: come and walk with us. ✨ See you in the mountains, Guidders!
