WHY THIS HIKE

The Monticelli lakes in Valle delle Messi

Alpine tarns in a valley few people know.

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

We set off with the Guidders from Sant'Apollonia, in the upper Valle delle Messi, and follow the valley floor through genuine, little-walked country. The climb to Malga Monticelli is the hardest part of the day: steady, but it takes you up quickly and opens ever-wider views across the mountains of the upper Valle Camonica. From the dairy a loop begins among the Monticelli tarns, small sheets of water set between rock and grassland, wrapped in a silence you can feel.

5 reasons to come - the Monticelli tarns, one after another - Malga Monticelli and its high pastures - a genuine valley, off the busy circuits - the view across the upper Valle Camonica - the closing loop, with a new view at every bend

Who it suits The climb to the dairy is steady and demanding, and a few high sections ask for a sure step.

Silence and water at two thousand metres: come and look for them with the Guidders.
