The experience

The Sentiero Roma is one of the most famous treks in the Alps, and it runs in the presence of legendary mountains: Pizzo Badile, the Cengalo, Monte Disgrazia, the Ligoncio, Cima di Castello and Cima di Zocca.

Day 1. From the Bagni di Masino to Rifugio Omio. Day 2. From the Omio to Rifugio Gianetti, below the Badile. Day 3. From the Gianetti to Rifugio Allievi Bonacossa and on towards Rifugio Ponti, across high passes and wild valleys.

This is the Val Masino variant: a technical, spectacular route for anyone after a new challenge.

5 reasons to come - the Sentiero Roma, an Alpine legend - Pizzo Badile and the Cengalo up close - historic huts, one for each evening - high passes between one valley and the next - the granite of the Val Masino, unique in Italy

Who it suits A technical high-altitude route, with fitted passes and rocky ground: excellent fitness and experience are needed.

HOW TO GET THERE
07:30PARKING
Bagni di Masino to Omio Refuge Hike
Starting from the Bagni di Masino parking area (1172 m), cross a small bridge to reach a mule track heading uphill to the right and into the woods. The trail follows a fairly direct route to the mountain hut. After leaving the coniferous forest (approx. 1750 m), the path turns left across rocky slabs to reach the Omio mountain hut (2100 m, 2 hours).
10:00MOUNTAIN HUT
"Omio Hut to Gianetti Hut Trek"
We'll traverse the pastures of the Golden Valley until we reach the entrance to Barbacan Pass. The pass is accessed via a steep, equipped gully. After overcoming the most challenging section, the trail bends right and climbs more gently over grassy slopes. The final stretch becomes steeper until you reach the south-east Barbacan Pass. From the pass, we'll descend initially on exposed ledges (a fully equipped section) until we reach the fork for the "north-west" Barbacan Pass. From here, we continue, following the Sentiero Roma trail, until we reach the Gianetti Refuge.
