WHY THIS HIKE

In the heart of the Gran Paradiso

At 2720 meters, right at the foot of Gran Paradiso. We walk in from one side, and come down the other.

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

We start with the Guidders from Le Pont, in Valsavarenche, climbing through the valley as woods give way to open pastures. We hike with the Guidders up to the Vittorio Emanuele II Hut, at 2720 meters, where the view opens onto the Gran Paradiso glaciers. This is a traverse: up one way, down the other, with the landscape shifting the whole way. An optional detour to Lake Moncorvè, right near the hut, is well worth the stop.

Back in 1856, King Vittorio Emanuele II came up here to hunt ibex — the hut still carries his name today, one of the oldest and most loved refuges in the Alps.

5 reasons to join - the historic Vittorio Emanuele II Hut at 2720 meters - a true traverse, with scenery that keeps changing - Lake Moncorvè, a timeless detour - full views onto the Gran Paradiso glaciers - a full day of authentic Aosta Valley

Who it's for Hikers with good stamina and a taste for a long day at altitude. No technical sections, but some hiking experience helps.

Ready to join? The Guiddy community is waiting to take on this traverse to one of the most iconic huts in the Alps.

HOW TO GET THERE
A
09:00WATER
Departure from Le Pont, Valsavarenche
We meet the Guidders at Le Pont (Le Breuil), Valsavarenche, Aosta Valley: the start time is indicative, the exact one will be shared in the Telegram group. We set off on a wide trail in the valley, with the stream keeping us company as we gain altitude.
B
11:00WATER
Climbing the moraines towards 2450m
The trail gets steeper and we gain altitude step by step among scree and moraines. The effort pays off with a view that keeps opening up over the valley below.
C
12:00WATER
Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II — Lunch stop
We reach Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, the highest point of our traverse, with the Gran Paradiso dominating the panorama all around. We stop for lunch with a glacier view and celebrate this milestone together with the Guidders.
D
14:00WATER
Panoramic ridge over the valley
Continuing the traverse we climb once more along a ridge with open views over the valley and surrounding peaks. It's the highest point before the descent towards Pravieux, worth enjoying slowly.
E
16:30WATER
Arrival at Pravieux — Rifugio Chabod
We close the loop at Pravieux, near Rifugio Chabod: the steep descent gave us beautiful views right to the last step. With the hike over, we enjoy a cold beer or a coke with the Guidders by the cars before saying goodbye.
