Rifugio Maniago: a loop trek in the Friulian Dolomites, through larches and beech trees
Maniago hut: the wild loop
A loop through larch woods, beech trees and the wildest side of Val Zemola.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Erto e Casso, diving straight into the forest of Val Zemola — over 120 km of trails woven into the Dolomiti Friulane. We climb steadily through larches and beeches up to Casera Mela, our stop before the final push to Rifugio Maniago, sitting at 1721 metres: the trail steepens here, and that's exactly what makes the arrival feel earned. The route is a loop: up one way, down another, with the landscape shifting at every turn. On the way down we cross woods and clearings that suddenly open onto glimpses of Dolomite rock.
The hut is the natural gateway to a valley shaped by generations of trails: the line between hike and adventure gets thin here, but we stick to the most scenic, genuine way through.
5 reasons to join - Rifugio Maniago as our goal, deep in Val Zemola's forests - a true loop, climb and descent always different - larch and beech woods that change with every season - that final climb, the one you'll remember - Dolomiti Friulane views that open up out of nowhere
Who it's for You'll need solid hiking habits and trained legs: not for a first day out, but no alpinism skills required either. Steady pace and a love for real forests.
