Rifugio La Canua from Montuglio: a terrace over Lake Como below the Bregagno
Rifugio La Canua above Lake Como
A hut on a natural terrace, with Lake Como stretching out below you.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Montuglio, the upper hamlet of San Siro, and climb a mule track through chestnut woods and meadows that opens further onto the lake at every bend. The path is well trodden and asks for no experience. At Rifugio La Canua the view is the whole point of the day: Legnone and the Valsassina opposite, the Pian di Spagna and the Valchiavenna Alps to the north, the Corni di Canzo to the south. Anyone who feels like it climbs a little higher onto the ridge above the hut, where the view carries all the way to Switzerland. Lunch at the hut or from your pack, then back down the same path.
5 reasons to come - Lake Como from Colico to Lecco, all in one view - the terrace of Rifugio La Canua - the panoramic mule track through chestnuts and meadows - the ridge above the hut, for anyone who wants more - one of the finest viewpoints on the Lario
Who it suits An easy outing on a well-trodden mule track: fine even if you are just starting to walk in the mountains.
The lake from up there is something else: come and see it with the Guidders.
