Rifugio Ferioli at Colle Mud: summer hike through Walser trails in Valsesia
Ferioli Refuge: far from the noise
At 2264 meters there's a mountain hut that CAI members have taken turns running for forty years. We're heading up there with the Guidders.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Rima S Giuseppe, taking a trail that climbs steadily through the woods. It's an out-and-back route: we gain elevation step by step, passing by mountain huts and alpine pastures, and the higher we climb, the more the landscape opens up toward the peaks of Valsesia. Once past the toughest part of the climb, the trail levels out until we reach Colle Mud, where the Rifugio Ferioli awaits us. On the way down we retrace the same path, with the altitude treating us to fresh air before heading back to the valley.
The pass on which the hut stands was once part of the Walser pass system, used by ancient populations to connect Valsesia and Sermenza valley. The hut itself is a real gem: run entirely by members of the CAI section of Olgiate Olona, for years it has had the reputation of serving the best food of any hut in the area.
5 reasons to come - Rifugio Ferioli, run by CAI members since 1983 - the charm of the Walser pass trail - the view that opens up as you climb - a cold beer at the top, earned step by step - the authentic atmosphere of a true mountain hut
