Rifugio Damiano Chiesa: trekking on Monte Altissimo di Nago, Trentino
Rifugio D. Chiesa: top of Baldo
A war-time refuge, a view that never ends.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Brentonico, climbing through woods and pastures toward the summit of Monte Altissimo di Nago, the highest peak of the Trentino side of Baldo. The route is an out-and-back: we gain altitude steadily in the final climbing stretches, then retrace our steps seeing the landscape in a whole new light. Waiting for us at the top is the Rifugio Damiano Chiesa, inaugurated in 1892 and open daily in summer season: the perfect spot for a break with a view.
The whole mountainside tells the story of World War I: trenches, tunnels, remains of Austro-Hungarian defenses and a small chapel honoring the fallen. The refuge is named after a young man from Rovereto captured and killed by the Austrians, and even Fortunato Depero left a drawing in the guestbook here.
5 reasons to join - the highest panoramic peak of the Trentino Baldo - the historic Rifugio Damiano Chiesa, open year-round on weekends - a route steeped in the history of the Sentiero della Pace - an area of great botanical interest - views stretching over Lake Garda, the Adige valley and the Dolomites
