Albani Refuge at Epiphany: A Winter Trek at the Foot of the Presolana
Epiphany at Rifugio Albani
Epiphany beneath the north wall of the Presolana.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders above the village of Colere, in the Val di Scalve, one of the snowiest areas of the Orobie. The winter path climbs towards Rifugio Luigi Albani, which stands in the embrace of the sheer north wall of the Presolana: a limestone rampart that in winter looks more imposing still, all spires and deep shadow. Around it the natural amphitheatre holds the basin and the Polzone tarn like a small suspended world.
5 reasons to come - the north wall of the Presolana in winter - Rifugio Albani, warm in the middle of the snow - the basin and the Polzone tarn - the Val di Scalve, among the snowiest parts of the Orobie - Epiphany spent in the mountains rather than at the table
Who it suits A winter climb on path: proper kit and normal fitness for walking on snow.
In January the mountains put on their magic: come and see it with the Guidders.
