Arabia's Grand Canyon, canyons with water and an orange desert
Oman is unlike the rest of the Gulf: no skyscrapers, no glass. There is Jebel Shams, three thousand metres, with Wadi Ghul opening a thousand metres of vertical wall below it and a path, the Balcony Walk, running along the canyon wall to an abandoned village.

Hotel a Mascate, notti sul Jebel Shams e sul Jebel Akhdar, campo tendato nelle Wahiba, riserva di Ras al Jinz
Then there are the wadis, canyons with green water and palms at the bottom: at Wadi Shab you walk, swim and enter a cave with a waterfall inside. There are the terraced villages of Jebel Akhdar, the orange dunes of the Wahiba Sands, where you sleep in a tented camp, and the coast at Ras al Jinz, where green turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs (in November you may see them, but it is not guaranteed).

Due giornate di trekking: il Balcony Walk sul Jebel Shams (circa 8 km andata e ritorno e 400 m di dislivello, mezza giornata, a quasi 2.000 m) e Wadi Shab (circa 5 km a piedi su roccia e sassi, più un tratto a nuoto). Il resto sono passeggiate brevi: il sentiero fra la vecchia Mascate e Mutrah, i villaggi del Jebel Akhdar, la duna al tramonto, le rocce di Wadi Bani Khalid. Quota massima circa 2.000 m. Ci sono giornate con 3-4 ore di strada in 4x4. Adatto a chi fa escursioni in giornata da 10 km e 500 m di dislivello e sa nuotare.
Safety
MUST READ
Balcony Walk: sentiero a mezza costa senza protezioni, con tratti esposti sul vuoto; non adatto a chi soffre di vertigini.
Wadi Shab e Wadi Bani Khalid: per arrivare alla grotta di Wadi Shab si nuota in acqua dove non si tocca, quindi serve saper nuotare. Le rocce bagnate scivolano: scarpe da acqua o sandali chiusi. Se piove l'acqua nei wadi sale in fretta: non si entra, decide la guida.
Deserto e montagna: mai da soli, nel deserto solo col 4x4 e l'autista. Di notte in quota e fra le dune fa freddo.
Golfo: Viaggiare Sicuri segnala tensioni nell'area e possibili ripercussioni sui voli, e sconsiglia i viaggi non necessari nel Musandam e a Duqm, che non sono nel nostro giro. Ricontrolliamo prima della partenza.
Accommodation
Due notti in hotel a Mascate, una sul Jebel Shams vicino al bordo del canyon, una sul Jebel Akhdar, una in campo tendato nelle Wahiba, una nella riserva delle tartarughe di Ras al Jinz e l'ultima di nuovo a Mascate.
Transport
Volo per Mascate non incluso, e nemmeno il transfer fra aeroporto e hotel. Sul posto 4x4 con autista per tutto il giro: le strade di montagna e le piste del deserto si fanno solo in fuoristrada. Le giornate con più strada sono la terza (Mascate, Nizwa e Jebel Shams: quasi 4 ore in due pezzi), la quinta (dal Jebel Akhdar alle Wahiba: circa 3 ore più la pista nella sabbia) e la sesta (dalle Wahiba a Ras al Jinz passando da Wadi Bani Khalid: circa 3 ore e mezza).
