Monteviasco in autumn: the village without roads, the beeches and the mule track of a thousand steps
Monteviasco: the roadless village
A stone village no road reaches, beech and chestnut woods turning copper in November and a mule track of steps carved into the mountain: Monteviasco is a trip back in time, an hour and a half from Milan.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Curiglia and climb the Viaschina path through the coloured woods, passing Viasco, up to Monteviasco, where we stop for lunch among the alleys and stone roofs. On the way back we descend the famous mule track of steps, more than a thousand of them, to the stream at Ponte di Piero, and return to Curiglia.
Before the cable car Monteviasco could only be reached on foot, and everything, from bricks to bread, was carried up those steps on people's backs.
Anyone who walks with some regularity: the climb is gentle, and the steps on the way down are taken calmly.
Come and discover Monteviasco with the Guidders: a village that seems stuck a hundred years ago.
Curiglia is about an hour and forty from Milan: motorway to Varese, then Luino, Dumenza and the Val Veddasca road. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
