WHY THIS HIKE

Mount Sobretta at 3296 meters

A summit of 3,296 metres, among the remains of a glacier.

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

We set off with the Guidders in the Valfurva and climb towards Monte Sobretta, a fine high summit that on clear days offers unforgettable scenery. Years ago its central basin held a sizeable ice field, whose remains are still visible: it is precisely this that makes the climb so striking, among tarns, glacial flats and thresholds. We pass the Laghetto dell'Alpe and reach the 3,296 metres of the summit.

5 reasons to come - a summit above three thousand metres in the Valtellina - the glacial remains of the central basin - the Laghetto dell'Alpe along the climb - striking glacial flats and thresholds - a view that on clear days knows no limits

Who it suits A long, demanding high-altitude trek: excellent fitness and a sure step on alpine ground.

For Guidders who collect summits: come with us.

HOW TO GET THERE
08:30PARKING
Departure
We'll set off from the Ponte all'Alpe parking area, initially following a military road before switching to a hiking trail that leads us to the stunning Lago dell'Alpe.
10:30MOUNTAIN HUT
Alpe Lake
Shortly before reaching the lake, we'll leave the main trail and follow the numerous cairns that wind upwards through the moraine and over the smooth rocks sculpted by the ancient glacier. With the glacier now in sight, we'll head for its upper edge, just a few meters from the Sobretta Pass.
13:30EXPERT TRAIL
On top of Mount Sobretta
From the wide, scree-covered slope to the left of the pass, we reach the sub-peak at 3254 meters. Returning to the pass, we now follow the ridge on the opposite side, traversing another sub-peak. Then, avoiding a sharp and rocky section of the ridge on the right, we finally arrive at the summit cross.
16:00RETURN
End of the trail
After soaking in the panoramic views from the summit and enjoying a well-deserved lunch, we'll descend to our vehicles along the same trail we ascended.
