Monte Morissolo, Lake Maggiore

You start from the lake, you arrive among the clouds. This is a loop trail that deserves it all, step after step.

The experience

You set off from Oggiogno, at 541 m, and the climb grants no small talk: beech woods, clearings, and then Monte Morissolo revealing itself in all its shape. A stop at Alpe Ronno, the last water point before the trail turns wild, all the way to the summit ridge at 1286 m, where Lake Maggiore opens up beneath your feet. The descent switches sides: steeper, more direct, with ever-changing views. In total, 11 km and 1260 m of elevation gain.

Setting off from Oggiogno
We set off with the Guidders, leaving the village behind and gaining height straight away. Legs are fresh and spirits high: the climb is still just a number.

Climbing to Alpe Ronno
Through beech woods and clearings, the forest opens up now and then onto the lake. At the alpe we fill up on water, our last chance, spotting donkeys and goats grazing: real mountain life, just like it used to be.

11:00HIDDEN POINT
Along the ridge, on the Cadorna Line
The trail turns wilder as we enter the Cadorna Line, the defensive system built in 1915-18 under General Luigi Cadorna. Trenches and military mule tracks, never touched by battle, are now an open-air museum.

Monte Morissolo and the Tre Croci
The natural balcony of the loop: Lake Maggiore spreads out 360° beneath us along a nearly flat stretch of ridge. Here we open our backpacks slowly, and the sandwich tastes like nothing else.

Descent and return to Oggiogno
We head down a different side, steep and direct, with new views at every turn. We close the loop with the group, legs tired and heads full of lake.
