WHY THIS HIKE

Mondolè: the perfect loop hike

A loop trail with views over the Ligurian Alps. And a mountain hut waiting for you on your return.

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

We set off with the Guidders from Rifugio Balma, at almost 1900 meters, when the air is still cool and the sun isn't yet scorching. We climb through meadows where cows graze, with the Ligurian Alps opening up wider with every step. The ascent becomes steep in the final stretches before the summit, then we reach Monte Mondolè, at 2385 meters: from here the panorama stretches from the Apuan Alps all the way to Monte Rosa. The descent closes the loop with some steeper sections, which here turn into pure fun, all the way back to the hut.

5 reasons to come - the summit of Monte Mondolè with views over the entire Alpine arc - a true loop, never the same scenery twice - Rifugio Balma at the finish, ready for a break - Breathtaking panoramas and, with a bit of luck, a view of Corsica

Who it's suited for A hike for those with good legs and the desire to walk for a few hours, with a few steeper sections to tackle with the right pace. No mountaineering experience or technical gear required.

Book with the Guidders: you set off early, in the cool morning air, and come back with a beer in hand.

HOW TO GET THERE
A
09:00WATER
Departure from Colla del Prel
We'll meet up with the Guidders at Colla del Prel, where we'll carpool (using the most capable cars, since there's a stretch of unpaved road) and head up to Rifugio Balma, above Frabosa Soprana (CN), to set off in the cool morning air. The time is indicative and will be confirmed in the trip's Telegram group: from here, the summer loop towards Monte Mondolè kicks off amid meadows and mountain air.
B
09:45MOUNTAIN HUT
Rifugio Balma - Start of the hike
We leave the cars at Rifugio Balma before setting off on the climb. We start right away with a bang, with a short but intense ascent up to Colla del Mondolè. From here a breathtaking view opens up over the Maudagna valley below, with the panorama stretching all the way to the highest peaks of the Maritime Alps.
C
13:00WATER
Monte Mondolè summit — lunch break
After a steady climb, steep in places but never boring, we reach the summit of Monte Mondolè: an open panorama over the Ligurian Alps and a lunch break with a view to enjoy. The summer heat feels lighter up here, and the whole group savors the best moment of the day.
D
15:30MOUNTAIN HUT
Rifugio Balma - Post-hike beer
Once we finish the loop, we head back to the cars at Rifugio Balma, where we'll grab a beer before driving back to Colla del Prel.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Chiara, an environmental hiking guide: I'm almost 34 and I have a physical need to see the Alps every morning the moment I wake up. If I can't see them from the window, it means I'm on them. I call myself a "pop" guide: the mountains aren't a race for me, they aren't a running stopwatch and — I'll admit it — I'm no fan of Strava. If you want someone measuring every heartbeat or chasing a speed record, I'm probably not your guide. But if you want someone who stops open-mouthed in front of a stunning view, even the thousandth one that day, we'll get along brilliantly. 🥾 See you in the mountains, Guidders!
