Monte Messer: a wild trek through rocky ridges in Alpago
Messer: the wild summit
A real summit, far from the crowded trails.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Pian Formosa, in the heart of the Alpago mountains, climbing through woods and increasingly steep slopes toward the Toffolon Bivouac, perched on a grassy terrace at 1990 m. From there the trail changes character: short rocky steps, a few hands-on moves and a ridge section that delivers real thrills, before the final push to the flat summit of Monte Messer, the highest point of the Alpago's central ridge. It's an out-and-back route: the descent retraces the same line, with the same views seen from a new angle.
This is still wild, rarely-visited terrain: few people really know it, and those who reach the top know why it matters.
5 reasons to come - the highest peak of the Alpago ridge, off the beaten path - the Toffolon Bivouac, a scenic stop at 1990 m - rocky scrambles that make the climb a real adventure - optional detour to Col Antander and its ancient beech tree - a rugged, solitary landscape far from the crowds
Who it's for For hikers with trained legs, a clear head for exposed sections, and a taste for going beyond the easy trails. This isn't a stroll: it's a hike for experienced trekkers.
Bring enough water and food: there are no springs or rest stops along the way. Join the Guidders: we start early in the morning to make the most of the day up high.
