Madonna della Corona: the Sanctuary carved into the cliff of Monte Cimo
Madonna della Corona: rock & faith
A sanctuary glued to the rock, hanging over the void. You can only reach it on foot.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Brentino Belluno and climb the Pilgrim's Path, an out-and-back route that makes itself felt step after step. We cross the woods, pass the cross that watches over the valley, and reach the Grotta della Pietà, a tiny niche in the rock with its own story of devotion. Then comes the highlight: the Ponte del Tiglio, a stone bridge spanning a deep gorge, followed by the final staircase, carved zigzag into the sheer wall of Monte Cimo, protected by railings on both sides. At the top we find the Santuario della Madonna della Corona, built right into the cliff as if it had grown there.
Legend says the Madonna statue was once hidden in the Grotta della Pietà during restoration works: a detail that makes every step up here feel even more real.
