Val Vogna: the Walser hamlets and the Napoleonic bridge
Walser houses, chapels and a road to the Aosta Valley
We walk one of the most evocative routes of upper Valsesia, which has a different charm in every season. We cross the upper hamlets of Val Vogna, with their typical Walser houses of wood and stone: buildings the Alemannic people brought here from the Valais centuries ago, still standing as they were.
The experience
We start from Ca' di Janzo and walk to the village of Peccia, with its chapel dedicated to San Grato, and to the Napoleonic bridge on the old Via Regia: the road that connected Valsesia and the Aosta Valley over the Valdobbia pass.
It is 10 kilometres with barely 300 metres of ascent: a route genuinely suited to everyone, more a walk through history than a climb. For those interested, a guided visit to the Walser ethnographic museum is possible with a minimum of 10 participants, at 5 euros each.
This is an easy hike: 10 kilometres with 300 metres of ascent, on comfortable mule tracks and trails. Perfect for beginners, for those walking with children and for anyone after a mountain day without the effort. Bring walking shoes and water.
