Pietra Quadra Lake at Snowmelt: A Hidden Gem in the Orobie Alps
Lake Pietra Quadra in the Orobie
The thaw turns this lake into something worth the trip.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from the Baite di Mezzeno, above Roncobello, on a loop that passes the Bivacco Tre Pizzi and reaches Lago di Pietra Quadra. In spring the route is especially alive: small streams cross the path, waterfalls form on the slopes and residual snow contrasts with the returning green. The lake, with water and ice together, is exactly why it is worth coming now.
5 reasons to come - Lago di Pietra Quadra at thaw time - the Bivacco Tre Pizzi and its tarns - the streams and waterfalls that form in spring - the view reopening across the Val Brembana - a loop that does not repeat the way up
Who it suits A mountain route with possible residual snow: a sure step and care on wet ground.
Spring up high lasts only a few weeks: come and take it with the Guidders.
