Lago del Culino in Val Gerola: easy trek and the flavours of Bitto cheese
Lago del Culino and Bitto
An alpine lake, the Bitto pastures and lunch in the hut.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Rifugio Bar Bianco, above Gerola Alta, and climb gently through the pastures of Alpe Culino: this is where Bitto is made in summer, the cheese that gave the valley its name. The path is wide and well marked, the climb easy-going, and it leads to Lago del Culino, a quiet basin ringed by rhododendrons and larches with Pizzo dei Tre Signori behind it. We stop for as long as we like, then head back to the hut for lunch: polenta, Bitto and Casera, the real flavours of the Val Gerola.
5 reasons to come - Lago del Culino among rhododendrons and larches - the high pastures where Bitto is made - Pizzo dei Tre Signori as a backdrop - lunch in the hut with the valley's own produce - a slow day, with no rush
Who it suits An easy climb on a wide path: fine for anyone new to the mountains and for families with children used to walking a couple of hours.
Come to the Val Gerola with the Guidders: we walk slowly and we eat well.
