La Gomera, the Canary Islands' trekking island: 7 days of primordial forest, ocean and volcanic trails
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Intermediate Plus
Description
La Gomera in 7 days: 600 km of trails, the Garajonay forest and the ocean
An island of 369 km² with 600 km of trails: ancient mule tracks, paths carved into rock, the laurel forest of Garajonay National Park that has survived for millions of years. Based in Hermigua, among the banana groves, with a different loop or traverse every day: the Mirador de Abrante hanging over the coast, the cliffs and rock monoliths of Vallehermoso, the island's summit at 1,487 metres, the La Merica balcony and a swim at Valle Gran Rey, the final traverse down to Playa La Caleta.
You walk 9–13 km a day with 300–600 metres of ascent: real hikes, nothing technical. Five days of walking, a dip in the Atlantic and the Silbo Gomero, the whistled language still used here from one valley to the next.
