Rocciamelone: the highest summit of Val di Susa
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Difficult Plus
Description
A 3,538-metre summit above Susa
Rocciamelone is the highest peak in Val di Susa and one of the most recognisable in Piedmont: its profile is visible from the plain, and it towers over the town of Susa with a striking height difference packed into less than ten kilometres, an almost unique case in the European Alps.
Our climb starts from Rifugio La Riposa and follows the normal route. It is 1,500 metres of ascent and nine hours of walking: a route for experienced hikers, asking for serious fitness and a sure step. In return you reach 3,538 metres, where the view spans the whole valley and the surrounding peaks as far as the French border.
This mountain has a long history: the summit has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and holds a sanctuary, one of the highest in Europe. Getting there on foot, with the group, is worth every step of the climb.
Why come
- a summit over 3,500 metres reachable in a single day
- the most concentrated height gain in the Western Alps
- the sanctuary at the top, a place of pilgrimage for centuries
- the view over the whole Val di Susa and the Cottian Alps
Who it suits
This is a hard hike, for those with trained legs and some habit of high altitude: 1,500 metres of climbing, nine hours of walking and alpine ground higher up. Bring high boots, poles, a windproof jacket and at least two litres of water. Not suitable if you have never done long mountain days.
Come with the Guidders: book your place and let's reach the top of Rocciamelone.

RoadTo4000
Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm RoadTo4000, Road to 4000 started as a path for anyone who wants to step into mountaineering the right way, one stage at a time, building up to the climb to Capanna Margherita. I've learned that altitude isn't conquered overnight: it's built outing after outing, training endurance, learning to handle elevation gain and gaining confidence in different mountain environments. What I love most is watching a group of strangers turn into a real team: people who get to know each other step by step, share genuine experiences and arrive ready for their date with the 4000 meters. I believe that solid preparation and real sharing are the true foundation for climbing safely. Whoever sets off with me will find a path made of training, skills and friendship, with the summit as a concrete goal, but the journey, the people and the emotions along the way are what truly matter. See you in the mountains, Guidders!
