Monte Ziccher in Val Vigezzo

Val Vigezzo is the «painters' valley» and in November you see why: yellow larches, red beeches and stone villages in between. Monte Ziccher is its easiest and most panoramic summit, with views from Monte Rosa to the Swiss peaks above Locarno.

The experience

We start from Vocogno, a hamlet of Craveggia, and climb through beeches to Alpe Blitz, a pasture with huts still in use. From there the trail leaves the woods and reaches the ridge and the summit, 1,967 m, in an hour and a half.

Summit lunch and down the same way. Anyone keen extends the day with the Vigezzina Foliage Train, which on weekends until mid-November links Santa Maria Maggiore and Domodossola.

No hut open in autumn: packed lunch. With snow on the ridge the guide stops at Alpe Blitz. The Foliage Train is booked separately.

Vocogno is an hour and fifty from Milan: A26 and expressway to Domodossola, then the Val Vigezzo road to Craveggia and its upper hamlet. Free parking. By train: the Vigezzina from Domodossola stops at Santa Maria Maggiore, ten minutes by car. Car pooling in the Telegram group.
