The Mont Avic lakes and the Barbustel hut
The Mont Avic lakes
The first park in the Aosta Valley, and its lakes in autumn.
The experience
Mont Avic looks nothing like the rest of the Aosta Valley: no huge glaciers, no cover-shot walls, but a quiet side valley covered in mountain pine forest, the kind that has almost vanished from the western Alps. Protecting them is part of why this park was created in 1989. We climb with the Guidders from Champdepraz into the woods, water heard before it is seen. Then the trees open out and the lakes begin, each a different colour depending on the light. Lago Bianco is the widest, and on its shore stands Rifugio Barbustel: the right place to drop your pack and hold something warm while you watch the water.
5 reasons to come - the Mont Avic lakes, each one different from the last - Rifugio Barbustel on the shore of Lago Bianco - mountain pine forest, now rare in the western Alps - in October the larches turn all at once and the slope goes orange - the first nature park in the Aosta Valley, since 1989
Who it suits A steady climb through the woods on well-marked paths: normal walking fitness, nothing difficult.
Autumn here lasts two weeks: come and catch it with the Guidders.
