WHY THIS TREK

Gran Sasso Experience: 3 Days

There is a place in Italy where the Apennines start behaving like the Alps.

Group chat before departure
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

Campo Imperatore, Abruzzo's Little Tibet: a vast plateau where the wind runs free, horses graze wild and there is not a pylon or a warehouse on the horizon. For three days the Guidders set up base at Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi, perched on the crest of Monte Portella: step out of the door and you are already high.

Day 1. From Fonte Cerreto we climb to Campo Imperatore and the hut, under the gaze of the Corno Grande. Day 2. The wild loop of Pizzo Cefalone, the finest ridge on the plateau. Day 3. Sunrise on Monte Aquila and the way home, with the Calderone — the southernmost glacier in Europe — right there beside us.

5 reasons to come - the Corno Grande, the roof of the Apennines - three days based in a hut, right on the ridge - the wild loop of Pizzo Cefalone - sunrise on Monte Aquila - Campo Imperatore, where the horses graze free

Who it suits Three days at altitude, one after another: you need fitness and a sure step on rocky ground.

Italy's wildest kingdom is waiting: let's go together, Guidders.

HOW TO GET THERE
08:30PARKING
Departure from Fonte Cerreto
🥾 DAY 1 — Corno Grande, the Roof of the Apennines 8 km · 900 m ascent · 7 hours · Difficult 09:00 — Ascent to Campo Imperatore (2,130 m). Briefing, gear check, and a first look at the vast plateau, often described as a little Tibet in the heart of Abruzzo. 08:00 — Hike up to Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi (2,388 m), დაახლოებით 40 minutes along the ridge trail. Heavy packs are left here so we can continue light and free. 08:45 — Departure for Corno Grande from Sella di Monte Aquila, joining the standard route. Scree slopes, steady climbing, and views that open wider with every step. 11:15 — The technical section: a gully and rocky passages where you’ll need to use your hands as well (Grade I scramble). We move one at a time, calmly and without rushing. 12:15 — WESTERN SUMMIT, 2,912 m. The highest point in the continental Apennines, with the Calderone Glacier right below your feet. Packed lunch on the summit or in a sheltered spot just below. 13:30 — Descent along the same route. 16:30 — Return to the refuge. Bunk allocation, hot tea, and sunset setting Corno Grande ablaze as seen from the terrace. Dinner and an overnight stay at altitude. 🎒 Packed lunch to be provided by each participant.
