Description
There is a place in Italy where the Apennines start behaving like the Alps.
Campo Imperatore, Abruzzo's Little Tibet: a vast plateau where the wind runs free, horses graze wild and there is not a pylon or a warehouse on the horizon. For three days the Guidders set up base at Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi, perched on the crest of Monte Portella: step out of the door and you are already high.
Day 1. From Fonte Cerreto we climb to Campo Imperatore and the hut, under the gaze of the Corno Grande.
Day 2. The wild loop of Pizzo Cefalone, the finest ridge on the plateau.
Day 3. Sunrise on Monte Aquila and the way home, with the Calderone — the southernmost glacier in Europe — right there beside us.
